At full speed through Duisburg's Regatta Course
German Championship of fin swimmers in the Sports Park Wedau

Fin Swimming at the Regatta Course

The Flossenteam Duisburg organized the German Championships of “Long Distance Fin Swimming in open water“ at the Duisburg Regatta Course from August 23 to 24, 2003 on behalf of the Verband der Sporttaucher, the German Underwater Sports Federation.

The monofin – a large fibre glass or plastic blade attached to both feet of the athlete – converts traditional swimming into turbo-charged fin swimming. Fin swimmers attempt to minimize their frontal resistance to the water by extending both arms in front and by keeping the upper body motion to a minimum. Only the lower body and legs are in constant undulating motion. Competitions are staged in pool and open water surface, either with a snorkel or without breathing equipment.

During the individual fin swimming competitions distances between 1,000 and 6,000 metres were covered, depending on the age group. For the relay races (3 x 1,000 – 3,000 m) a round course limited by buoys was set up in the Regatta Course. The competition was the trial competition to select the teams for the World Senior Championship Long Distance in Alexandria (Egypt) in September and the World Junior Championship in South Korea 2003.

During the championship the athletes performed superbly and the team that will go to Egypt is bigger than originally planned. Sandra Häßler of the Flossenteam Duisburg and Katharina Lörks (DJK VfR Mülheim Saarn) qualified for Alexandria due to their outstanding performance. Many members of the national team will keep pleasant memories of the Regatta Course in Duisburg Wedau. The atmosphere during the contest was excellent thanks to the weather, the good organization and the perfectly prepared competition area in the Sports Park Wedau.

Pleased with a successful National Championship: Joachim Goßow, Director of the 2005 World Games sports programme, Peter Orzol, Chief Executive Officer, Lutz Riemann, trainer of the national fin swimming team, Gerd Göldner, TD of the UIAA, Prof. Dr.
