Meridian Challenge 2004 Duisburg
Barefooted across the Regattabahn

This weekend, the barefoot waterski elite met in Duisburg. 43 athletes from eleven nations, mainly Europe and South Africa, held a competition in order to compare their skills on water within the 2004 EAME Challenge.

Already on Saturday, the excellent conditions on the Regattabahn were proven by a new world record. André de Villiers from South Africa earned 9.230 points in the fore runnings of the discipline “Trick”. The following Sunday, he established another record by earning 9.580 points. André de Villiers is also the current Junior Worldchampion in jumping with a distance of 26,30 meters. Therefore, his victory in Duisburg was not a big surprise. In the combination, with 2.929,11 points, he also came first in Division 1, which is the highest class. With 2.824,63 points David Small from Great Britain came second, while Patrick Wehner from France was ranked third with 2.713,29 points.

In the women’s competition the winner was the German Champion Svenja Hempelmann, who is also the European Champion in slalom and ranked third in the European Combination Championship. In Division 2 of men Daniel Goldie from Great Britain won with 2.729,73 points, leaving behind Frank Renelt from Germany and Jean-Marie Poncey from France.
