Headquarter of KVR in Essen

to KVR

An entire surface area of 4,434.30 km2, over 5.3 million inhabitants, 53 towns and communities spread over 11 administrative districts in their own right and 4 districts – impressive statistics marking the area of responsibility of the “Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet (KVR)“. As the oldest regional federation in Germany, with its headquarters in Essen, it is the region’s pillar and the Ruhr area’s mouthpiece. Its main tasks include the realization of structural changes through landscape development, creation or extension of recreational areas and regional leisure-time facilities, forestry, cartography and the provision of fundamental information such as aerial photographs as well as media and public relations work for the Ruhr area. The KVR is also involved in the development of an infrastructure for tourism and waste disposal. Two additional significant focal points are promoting culture and sport.
In the past the KVR has supported numerous sporting events – not only financially – and this reliable and successful cooperation on a sporting level can now be continued between the city of Duisburg and the KVR at the World Games 2005. Following the Universiade 1989, the world canoeing championships in 1995, the GAISF congress of international sports federations 1997 and the Rhine-Ruhr marathon, which has been held now since 1981, the KVR is once again providing the host city with its support in organizing the World Games. Apart from the financial support, the KVR is also a fellow partner in World Games 2005 GmbH together with the other four organizing towns of Duisburg, Bottrop, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Oberhausen. KVR representatives are also members of the advisory council, which exercises a consultative function. The KVR would like to contribute to making the World Games 2005 popular in the entire Ruhr area and to motivating all those Ruhr citizens interested in sport to visit the games. They shall then see that not only the typical football game in the Ruhr area is a central event, but also exotic kinds of sport such as sumo wrestling, casting, flying disc or rugby. In this way, sport enthusiasm in the Ruhr area shall once again be put to the test from 14 to 24 July 2005.
