  Mülheim an der Ruhr
Mülheim an der Ruhr - a modern city situated on the river: This is how the residents and guest alike see it. The river Ruhr - it is a focal point in Mülheim. Like a silver thread it flows a distance of 14 km from south to north, right through the city, lending it a very individual atmosphere. Over a 1,000 years ago a castle was built on its banks - the present day Schloß Broich; the place for representative events and private celebrations, for exhibitions on the city's history, for art and conferences.

Albrecht, Stinnes, Tengelmann - companies known worldwide. They were founded in Mülheim an der Ruhr and are still here today - together with prominent neighbours - from the modern service branch to the traditional leather industry. 175,000 Mülheim residents enjoy living in the "city on the river". The green area of over 50% shows: Here you can experience leisure time and recreational activities in their purest form - on foot or by bike, on horseback, by canoe or on board the "White Fleet", and it has been a destination for outings for both the locals and guests for generations. The city's calendar of events are packed with numerous cultural and sporting programmes: from highlights, such as the theatre days or piano festivals to the high-ranking horse races, hockey games and competitions quite unique in type in Mülheim. Take the longboat racing, for instance, or the competition between "squeaky ducks", these attract thousands of people to the Ruhr every year. International guest performances at Mülheim's cultural ambassador, the "Theater an der Ruhr", serve to spread the name of the city on the river throughout the world.
